Structural optimization combines mathematical optimization with structural design principles to find most efficient structures in terms of weight, cost or any other desirable criteria. We need optimization algorithms to search for the optimum and strength constraints to make the structures feasible in practice. The key issue is to find best balance between cost vs. accuracy considering strength assessment method and speed of the optimization algorithms.
