The course provides an introduction to the regulation of labour relations at the international level. The first section analyses the history of the international regulation of labour standards as it has emerged since the end of the 19th century with a particular focus on the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The second section addresses the social and economic arguments for the need to regulate labour relations at an international level. The subsequent three sections focus on the main sources of current labour standards; the ILO; EU common market law, and labour standards under international trade law, with a particular focus on the WTO-GATS agreements and labour standards clauses in EU trade agreements.
