Concept: "Good researchers are good authors." This course will provide you with a structured approach to write peer-reviewed publications. The focus is on conference and journal manuscripts. The result will be a completed manuscript, submitted as the final exam at the end of the semester.

What will you do? Each week, we will cover the core parts of a scientific paper including the Abstract, Introduction, Method, Results, Discussion and Conclusions. In addition, we will have two special sessions which focus on the preparation and presentation of figures and tables. In addition to technical aspects of writing, we will also engage in discussions on basic scientific principles, research ethics, critical thinking and writing with clarity and grace.

Who should take this course? This course is ideal for students in at least their second year of PhD studies and have completed the companion course on literature review.

Grading: Pass / Fail, 50% attendance, 50% final paper submission at end of semester.

During our time together, you will be working on your paper during a series of in-class exercises. You may work on a completely new paper, one which is partially completed, or an accepted paper which you can use to improve your writing skills.

This course is for you. To learn about how to become a better written communicator and to help you to contribute to your research community.
