Physics I introduces the fundamental principles of classical mechanics, molecular physics and thermodynamics. Topics include motion, Newton’s laws, conservation of momentum and energy, gravitation, rotational dynamics and non-inertial reference frames. The course also explores the molecular description of matter, ideal and real gases, heat capacity, thermodynamic processes and heat engines.

The emphasis is on understanding physical concepts, recognising the assumptions behind models and applying physical laws to explain phenomena and solve problems.
