The course is concerned with improving students’ speaking and listening skills in presenting, negotiating and participating in meetings.Students will enhance their public speaking skills, learn how to deal with questions and objections, negotiate, chair and participate in meetings and videoconferences. It also focuses on enhancing writing skills needed for business communication.

INTRODUCTION TO A PRESENTATION
Prepare a short 3-minute introduction to a presentation on a topic of your own choice. The introduction has to be delivered by heart, no slides are needed, effective opening techniques have to be used.

DESCRIBING A VISUAL
Each student will find a graph, bar chart, pie chart etc. describing changes in sales, profits, share price, market share etc. The data could be real or imaginary, compiled by the student themselves. If the data is taken from a source, pay special attention to the fact that all the information (title, legend, numbers) on the slide has to be in English.
The student will display the graph in form of a slide and will make a 3-minute presentation introducing the slide and data. The presentation has to be delivered by heart using the appropriate vocabulary and include relevant background details that have influenced the change/trend described.

FULL PRESENTATION
The students will do the presentation individually, the exact instructions are given by the lecturer in class. The students will have to sign up for the presentation in class in advance. The length of the presentation is about 10-12 minutes plus a few minutes for Q and A.

CLASSROOM MEETING + MINUTES OF THE MEETING
Read the case Fast Fitness and listen to the audio, interviews with candidates, and prepare for the classroom meeting. Look through the sample action points/minutes, file Meetings on p.9 and be prepared to take minutes.
Groups for meetings will be formed in class.

NEGOTIATIONS
Stages of a negotiation, bargaining, small talk/socializing, negotiation styles.
Using conditional sentences in negotiations is important. You cannot negotiate/bargain without using conditional sentences.

WRITTEN EXAM for the students of Anne Lelumees after the oral assignment appr at 12.00For revision see the materials in Week 1-15 Business emails and letters and the revision file below.
The written exam will include the following:
1) writing two business letters/emails using appropriate style and tone and standard email/letter-writing phrases
2) changing informal style/tone into formal style/tone
The two emails/letters will be basic types of business correspondence - enquiries, replies, follow-up letters/emails to telephone conversations/meetings

ORAL EXAM
The materials include case description, points to be considered in advance and the agenda - points to be negotiated at the oral exam.
Preparation:
1) Form groups of four students and agree on the roles - two represent the tour operator and two the hotel (see the case materials below)
2) Discuss and agree on the strategy to be used at the negotiation with your partner, but not with the representatives of the other company
3) The negotiation will take place according to the schedule, see the link Sign up for oral exam below.4) The negotiation will last for 30 minutes and each student has to participate actively (speak for about the same amount of time) and will be graded individually.
