The course provides knowledge about product life cycle assessment and its main stages, including goal and scope definition (product system function, functional unit, system borders, allocation etc.); life cycle inventory analysis (data collection); life cycle impact assessment (calculation of environmental impact through selection of environmental impact categories, category indicators and characterization factors, characterization of results, normalization and weighting); result interpretation (definition of significant issues, completeness check, sensitivity check, consistency check, reporting).
During online pre-course study, lecture materials will be recorded and provided for independent research. The online pre-course is supported by practical workshops, which will enable students to engage in small joint exercises to understand the theory of LCA better and learn how to use the OpenLCA software through simplified examples.
During the on-site basic LCA course, each student will conduct an individual life cycle assessment on selected products or materials. Mentoring with an expert in the field for each student will be provided. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply LCA methodology to the selected product using the "Open LCA" software.
