The core idea of ‘ICS0026 Cryptography’ is to give an overview about the field of cryptography, the common primitives and their use cases.
The course does not focus on the mathematics or the technical constructions of cryptographic primitives and schemes, rather the aim is to explain the when's and why's, the do's and don'ts.
Few of you will be actively working with applied cryptography, and even fewer of you will become theoretical cryptographers. As such, it is arguably more important to cover the fundamentals needed by all, rather than delve into cryptographic specificities — one course would hardly be enough anyways.
If you do have interest in the mathematics behind cryptography, consider taking the Master's level course: ITC8240, or/and ask me about additional materials.
