The key objective of learning analytics is to predict or detect unknown aspects of the learning process which is based on data analytics (historical and current behavior). Learning analytics can be seen in four different categories:

  • descriptive – what happened?
  • predictive – what will happen next?
  • diagnostic – why did it happen?
  • prescriptive – what to do to improve?

In this module we focus onto basic introduction of data analytics that any teacher can enable in their courses. In addition, the general structure of the study process is described, which would allow learning analytics to be carried out from different perspectives. This module focuses on the following aspects:

  • Course main settings that support to carry out learning analytics
  • Descriptive learning analytics, integrated tools in Moodle
  • Course activities that enable to gather data to carry out learning analytics
  • Data analytics (external tools) and the presentation of results (examples)

After finishing up this module, you are able to apply basic learning analytics techniques at your Moodle course.
